The Pomchi is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua. The American Canine Hybrid club officially recognizes this designer breed as Chiranian, but it is commonly referred to as the Pomchi. These lovable dogs are rather tiny, ranging from 5-12 lbs and 6-9 inches tall when full grown.
As with any hybrid dog, the appearance of the Pomchi can vary quite a bit. Most of the time, the look is quite charming. It is one of those dogs that always has a sweet expression on its face and looks like it is smiling. The muzzle is short and slightly pointed. The eyes tend to be very dark and round. Ears are medium-sized and erect. The furry tail is long for the size of the body and carried over the back. The coat can be single or double layered and full, soft and silky; some dogs have longer Pomeranian-type hair while others inherit the shorter Chihuahua hair. The fluffier ones should be groomed several times a week. Pomchis may come in just about any color.
When it comes to temperament, Pomchis are usually sweet and cuddly. They are great lapdogs and very affectionate towards their owner, but can sometimes be aloof around other people. They do not tolerate small children well. Additionally, they are very fragile, so it is not a good idea to play roughly with them or allow larger dogs to play with them.
To understand Pomchis better, it is helpful to look at their parent breeds. On the Pomeranian side, the breed originated from sled dogs in Iceland that were later brought to the Pomerania region of eastern Europe. Over time, they were bred to be smaller house pets and gained more popularity when they reached England in the 19th century. English breeders continued to reduce the size of the dog until it reached its current size. Modern day Pomeranians are known to be active, intelligent and loyal. Unfortunately, they are also frequent barkers, especially if they are not properly trained at a young age.
Chihuahuas are famous for being the smallest dog breed in the world. They are named for the Chihuahua state in Mexico, where they originated. They are highly valued for their devotion, courage and interesting personalities. Chihuahuas can adapt to just about any environment and do well in apartments and city dwellings. They usually make outstanding companions, but are not recommended around small children because of their tendency to bite when agitated. Some Chihuahuas become jealous of human interaction with “their†owner. Possessing a fearless nature, Chihuahuas may challenge much larger animals and be injured, so it important to protect them from their own aggressiveness.
Due to their small size, Pomchis only require feeding once a day. They also do not need as much exercise as most dogs, although they do like to run around in open spaces from time to time. Too much exercise during the puppy months can be harmful. They are sometimes prone to running away if not leashed. Healthy Pomchis can live up to 17 years.

You know, I was thinking, all you need to do is shave off the pomeranian’s fur and you got yourself a chihuahua, lol. Seriously though, chihuahuas come with all sorts of personalities, not just the stereotypical aggressive one as so often portrayed such as this blog post.
