Dog Facts: Smiling is Risky

When you approach a dog that’s “not so friendly,” your natural reaction would be to talk calmly and give it a nice, big smile. But, this is exactly what you don’t want to do. To a dog in attack mode, showing your teeth can be a sign of aggression. If you smile with your teeth shining, it might cause the dog to attack. In this case, smiling is not contagious!

  1. Never thought of it that way… good tip. I usually try to approach a new dog with a very calm face. Limited emotions showing so they dont feel threatened or overwhelmed. But never broke it down so far as to think of a big smile being like a snarly…
