Irish Setters: One of the Most Beautiful Dog Breeds

Irish Setters are beautiful, active dogs that love to play. The Irish Setter was developed in Ireland and bred primarily for hunting. They have an excellent sense of smell, are extremely fast and adapt well to a variety of climates. Irish Setters are considered to be one of the most beautiful of all dog breeds. Their lovely red coloring and friendly nature add to their attractiveness.

The coat of an Irish Setter is long and silky but it requires constant maintenance. The undercoat thickens in the winter. They shed quite a bit and the coat has a tendency to mat if not cared for properly. The Irish Setter’s coat needs to be brushed daily. Irish Setters are very active dogs that weigh on the average of sixty to seventy pounds. The Irish Setter is a very versatile dog. Not only are they beautiful and proficient hunters they are quite agile and excel in competitive obedience.

This breed is happiest and at its best when active. The Irish Setter is known for speed and endurance as well as its beauty. This dog needs plenty of room to run since it is at home in wide-open spaces. The Irish Setter is easily bored and may not do well if kept in small areas such as an apartment. Their energetic nature requires plenty of exercise, attention and affection.

Although the Irish Setter enjoys average health like most other breeds they can be susceptible to certain health conditions such as hip dysplasia, epilepsy, hypothyroidism and bloat as well as other disorders. Irish Setters are quite intelligent dogs but they tend to be stubborn and may resist training. Training should start early with this breed. A little patience and perseverance will be rewarded with a wonder companion and loving family pet.

Irish Setters love to play with other dogs and they enjoy human companionship. They love attention and usually don’t mind being brushed. Pet them often and give them plenty of affection and they are happy dogs. Irish Setters are tolerant and good-natured dogs. They are good with children. They make excellent family pets. Irish Setters are not aggressive dogs but they will bark as a warning to protect from strangers or other danger.
