Dog Sense or Nonsense?
Our canine friends have been the focus of many sayings and quotes over the years. Some are funny, some are silly, and some just make good sense. Let’s take a closer look:
A Barking Dog Never Bites
Okay, how many people believe this? Technically, a dog can’t bite someone while he or she is in the middle of a good, solid bark, but what’s to stop teeth from meeting skin when the dog is finished voicing displeasure? Call me crazy, but I’m betting that the barking dog is in fact the one most likely to bite you in the butt.
Barking up the Wrong Tree
How many dogs have you seen bark up the wrong tree? It does happen, but most dogs on the chase are pretty good at locating the subject of their barking. Now, as applied to humans… but that’s a different story altogether.
He Works Like a Dog
Okay, does this mean he actually works hard, or he’s lazy? Because most dogs I know have the most comfortable spot in the house, and they can be found there during the majority of hours each day. In fact, my dogs don’t work at all. I think they’re union.
It’s a Dog’s Life
Some people think this saying is intended to be negative. We know it’s not negative as applied to pets, but even dogs that aren’t family members still have a few advantages over humans. Most men will admit that there are certain things dogs can do that they cannot, that make men jealous.
Sick as a Dog
Now, this one is just gross. We all know what dogs do after they upchuck. I have never been that sick, and if I ever get that sick, someone please put me out of my misery.
You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks
What a bunch of hooey. Try bringing home a new pup and see how quickly your old dog learns stuff. He’ll learn to hide his food, hide from the pup, carry the pup by the scruff (to get it out of his bed), and all sorts of other neat tricks that won’t require much if any teaching. If you really want to see him jump through hoops, bring home a cat.
Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
This is sound advice, both figuratively and literally. However, it does beg the question of how such sage advice was acquired.
My Dog Wouldn’t Eat That
Okay, this one is usually a slam, a put down, but it does depend on the dog. Some dogs will eat anything, and I do mean anything, in which case this comment would be considered harsh criticism. In the case of dogs that eat better than most people do, it may simply be an observation. If someone says this about your cooking, make sure you know what kind of dog he or she has before taking offense.
It’s a Dog Eat Dog World
No matter how tough things get, dogs rarely devour each other. They might kick some butt, and yeah, every dog has its day, but dogs eating other dogs? That’s just pushing it. That dog won’t hunt. A better saying might be, “if you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.”
